guest blog post: TwitterTravels on tofu916

twittertravels is a new addition to mi blogroll. two ever-cool guys that i met on twitter, and now consider friends, traveling the earth. when i 1st met these dudes face to face, it dawned on mi that real people DO exist. they both seemed so down to earth and willing to commune. smoking cigs and having crazy convo about life experiences. when you meet them in person, you can see what makes each an entertaining writer. Jack & scarab are like two sides of the same coin. one side being the logical, analytical, experienced side – the other, is scarred, high octane and ready to throw down. which character is which? you’ll have to read more at the website.

to this day, i cant raise a glass without thinking of when these two.

When Tofu asked me if I would do a blog for him, I accepted right away. Now, almost a week later, I’m still trying to think of what to say. There is so much I could tell you, but hell, if you know Tofu, you already know it.

Tofu is a rare animal. Like me he’s some sort of creature born from the fallout and radiation of Post-WWII America. Horrible, hideous things we are. But we fucking survive. Bad things happen, we’ll be on top. Why? It’s the terrible instinctive drive that we can’t stop. It’s not a choice. It’s just what we do. We’re primal and savage. Something that is less (or maybe more) than Human.

Now ask me about Tofu’s music. Again, what can I say that you don’t already know? Tofu is a visionary. He brings this ghastly abomination that he is to every beat. You can feel it in your bones. The reptile brain starts to connect to the medulla oblongata. You can hear it. You can see it. Take “Golden Earrings” for example. I don’t know where he pulled that sample from [Peggy Lee], but damn it makes me feel like its 1936, and hip-hop is booming. Tofu is creating a new world. An alternate history. Bringing the past to the present and forcing us to relive things we never lived in the first place.

So what can I say? Roughly 300 words by the looks of it. This article might sound like I’m riding his dick, but I don’t care. Tofu is the man. He is a friend and a fellow savage. The real deal. Too sweet for old school, smarter than the new kids trying to be Ice-T.

Just check the shit out. Now. You won’t regret it.

———–

What can I say about this visionary from the west coast? If I tried to
describe the perfect sunset to a blind man, doubtful I’d fall short, just as
I feel I’ll do in this post. But I’m damn well going to try.

To meet the man behind the music, you wouldn’t think that such greatness
could be contained in such a small frame, but just like C-4, the explosion
compensates. A wild and free mind, riding the thermals of progression, high
above the clouds, just close enough for him to light a match under God’s toe
before spiraling down, laughing maniacally, to the rest of us. His music,
much like the man himself, is deep, true, and hard enough that even diamonds
couldn’t scratch it’s surface. There’s that cannibalistic center to the man
that eats everything that doesn’t fit, and uses it to fuel that inner fire
to keep on moving, regardless of the obstacles or problems that stand in his
way. Mixing the old with the new, Tofu forges something far greater than
just Hip-Hop or Street lyrics. His beats echo in the mind, burning
impressions deep in the soft tissue and leaving the listener better for
hearing them. Savage and wild, refined and fine tuned, this wild monster
creeps into your heart and soul to leave a message on the walls with spray
paint and human blood.

Regardless of your musical tastes, Tofu’s music is a creation of pure
genius. An auditory drug that would have to be freebased, because anything
else would be a waste to it’s purity. Like kissing a shotgun, it blows your
mind, grabs the pieces and puts them back together again, offering you an
omelet made from Humpty Dumpty after you’re through. The fear and pain of
the streets, the glimmer and glam of the big time, rolled into one and taken
to the head for a musical masterpiece that I’ve not heard before. It calls
to that animal in all of us, challenging us to crawl out of our holes to
stand in the sunlight, blinding and burning in the final self release of an
epiphany in the midst of a hurricane.

Thank you Tofu.
