I’m SO glad this was posted. This song reminds me of a cold New Years Eve, when I was about 16 years old. I was working at Blockbuster video, eagerly waiting to clock out to enjoy the remainder of the night. I had been scheduled to work until 11pm and the store was packed like sardines until about 10 o’clock…then it got really boring. A young woman walked in and asked which new releases we were holding for people and if I was nice enough to let her have one, as she had nothing to do tonight.Prince - Willing and Able [Diamonds and Pearls Video Collection]
She was fine. A rather slender frame, shoulder length brunette hair that you could tell had been recently cut. Her eyes were hazel, like that of a smooth Riesling dipped in honey. Her lips were full. Not quite as full as Angelina Jolie’s, but pouty enough to drive any man bananas. On top of all that, an ass like you wouldn’t believe, even if I could somehow email a picture of my memory! When she spoke, she spoke with steadfast confidence. She talked about her boring night and how shes usually a highly sociable woman, but attending Devry on a daily, kept her at bay. She was staying with her aunt (who lived near my store) while attending school.I actually was hiding a few of the new releases for myself, but she was so bad, I had to give them up!
To make a long post, short - She started getting at me! She asked what time I got off and what I was doing after work. I told her, reluctantly that I had to close the store and would likely be celebrating New Years at home. I couldn’t believe how forward this girl was! Usually, I’m the aggressor. Its been like that since even back when this story happened. “Well, I’m not doing anything special, but I was thinking about going to my hometown tonight. Have you ever been to Arbuckle?”. I hadn’t even heard of the place. But she offered to come back to Blockbuster and pick me up after work, and asked me to see if I could possibly get off any earlier to allow time to toast the new year.
I scanned her movies, she paid and went out to her car. I swiftly ran over to my supervisor and explained what just happened. At first, he didn’t believe me, “THAT girl that just walked out? Be serious.”. After a small debate, he told me that I could get off 30 minutes early. I walked out to her car and told her to pick me up at 10.30. She replied “Perfect.”. Apparently, Arbuckle was about an hour from where I lived.
10.45, I see the young lady pull up in her Toyota and let the engine idle. I shouted at the boss that I was leaving and strolled to her ride. Damn she smelled good! I remember her smelling so good…
She mentioned that she was running late and still needed to hit the liquor store to get some champagne and vodka. She had to know that I was underage, telling me to stay in the car while she walked in to pay for the selections. Later, she would reveal that she was 21 years old.
During our journey, we talked about various things. I told her about not my various after-high school wishes, she shared her entrepreneurship dreams and why she was attending Devry. Midnight had creeped upon us and she turned on the radio as we wished each other a Happy New Year. Finally, we arrived in Arbuckle - a town that closely resembled a ghost town from an old, John Wayne movie. It was fascinating.
We show up to what used to be her house. There were others that lived there, but I’m not sure anyone else was home. We cracked open the bottles of various spirits and almost immediately went to her old bedroom (which was now littered with various packed boxes and stuff all over the place). She plugged in an old boombox and asked me if i liked Prince. This girl had no idea that I was the biggest Prince fan to set feet on this earth! This must have excited her, because she thew on the “Diamonds and Pearls” CD, skipped to this song [willing and able] and started kissing me…For the next couple of hours, we had some awesome sex with this CD on repeat.
For me, being 16 years old. This was the perfect night. Prince’s Willing and Able will always remind me of that aggressive, beautiful young woman, whose name now escapes me.
